Nonpartisan Redistricting Legislation Introduced

A bipartisan bill (House Bill 69) to create a new independent, nonpartisan (or at least, less partisan) commission to draw district lines for members of the NC General Assembly and North Carolina’s congressional delegation was filed in the state legislature on Feb. 13, 2019 by Representatives Chuck McGrady (R Hendersonville); Jon Hardister (R Greensboro), Robert Reives (D Pittsboro), and Brian Turner (D Asheville).

Similar legislation was introduced in 2011 and 2013 with bipartisan support (including Speaker Tim Moore). At least 26 Republican members of the NC House have previously voted for or supported nonpartisan redistricting legislation and 10 Republican members of the House have signed on as co-sponsors of H 69 which has been referred to the House Redistricting Committee.
