Zero Tolerance and Family Separation: What Would Jesus Do?

In a letter to the editor of the Raleigh News & Observer published on Wednesday, June 20, Forward Together’s Executive Director, Rev. John L. Saxon, says that the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy that has resulted in the separation of thousands of migrant children and parents is cruel, immoral, and inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus.

“Regarding ‘Trump firm on immigration policy, as criticism grows’ (June 19): I’m pretty sure that if Donald Trump and Jeff Session read the Bible, they’ll find little or no support for the Trump Administration’s ‘zero-tolerance’ immigration policy that has resulted in the separation of thousands of children from their parents. Instead, they’d learn that Jesus refused to condemn a woman accused of adultery and said: ‘Let the little children come.’

“No wonder, then, that Franklin Graham, Laura Bush, the National Association of Evangelical Christians, US Catholic bishops, and others have condemned the administration’s policy as cruel and immoral.

“I hope that, as professed Christians, President Trump and Attorney General Sessions will remember the words of Jesus: ‘Whatsoever you have done to the least of my sisters, brothers, and children, you have done to me.'”
